I need it for a project. I can't quite pinpoint the exact events. Thank you. =)
What are the historical events that shaped Pakistan's current political system?concerts
Pakistan came into being on 14th august, 1947. at that time it was governed by the Governmnet of India act, 1935, an act sed by the then colonial power, Britain. Pkaistan had an elected constituent assembly, which failed to draft a constitution till 1956. The first constitution, which declared it to be a republic with parliamentary system, was promulgated in 1956. However, it was abrogated by the first martail law in 1958, and Ayub Khan, cheif of the army, took over. A new presidential constitution was promulgated in 1961, and Ayub Khpasan got elected as president as a civilian head of the state and governmnet. Pakistan was then composed of two geographically seperated wings, West Pakistan (the present Pakistan) and East Pakistan (presently Bangladesh). The relation between the two wings detoriated during this period and a civil war ensued, with Ayub Khan resigning and Yahya Khan, the then Army cheif, took over. However, even he could not control the situation and East Pakistan established itself as a seperate country, Bangladesh in 1971. Then, the 1973 constitution was promulgated in 1973, which is parliamentary in nature, and still in force. However, this constiution has been thrice suspended, first by General Zia Ul haq's Martial law in 1977, which remained intact till 1985, then by Gen Pervez Musharraf in 1999, which remained till 2002 and then again for a short period of 45 days by Musharraf again from Nov to Dec 2007.
