Germany's invasion of Poland prompted England to declare war on Germany... France followed suit to oblige its ally... the treaty of Versailles was also a cause...
as was the US refusal to ship gasoline/petrol to Japan... and a half dozen other items
Appeasement was a major problem. Other nations were willing to give Germany what it wanted. They let them annex Austria, then they let them take the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. Basically they said, "Germany, we will let you take the Sudetenland, but then you need to stop." This occurred at the Munich Conference. Well, Germany didn't stop, and soon took the rest of Czechoslovakia. No one really did anything to stop them. After this Germany decided to invade Poland on September 1, 1939. Since Britain and France had recently signed a treaty with Poland that promised to defend them, they had little choice but to enter the war. Another problem that led to France's defeat was allowing Germany to re-occupy the Rhineland. This was an area that Germany was not allowed to station troops in after WWI. Basically it was mean as a buffer zone between Germany and France. Belgium also led to France's defeat by not agreeing to extend the Maginot Line through Belgium. Since it only occupied the majority of the French border, minus the Ardennes Forest, Germany had little trouble getting behind the line, making it completely useless.
by no mean are those all the reasons, and I went into a lot less detail than I could have. I urge you to investigate some of the issues I mentioned above in more depth.
